Ayurvedic Golden Milk

Let’s be real this isn’t an original recipe, this is just the way that I like to make it.

In Ayurveda and Chinese medicine turmeric has been used for centuries to warm the body, reduce inflammation and move the blood. Turmeric’s curcumin content makes it a powerful herb for traditional healing. Together with these spices it wakes up the senses, gets the digestion moving and warms the interior, a sensation I call “a hug in a cup.”

I love to make this and put it in a thermo flask for work, sipping it throughout the day, feeling it nourish and warm my body. It really is a lovely sensation. Today, we can walk past and pick one up at any hip café but regularly I see it served without good fats or pepper, two ingredients that support its bioavailability as curcumin is not water soluble.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup Coconut milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • ½ cup water

  • 1 green cardamon crushed

  • 1/2 cinnamon stick

  • 2 black peppercorns or 1 crack of pepper

  • Fresh ginger to taste I prefer more about 2 tablespoons

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil or gee

  • Sweetener of choice, I prefer without, but you can add honey to your liking.

RECIPE

  1. Add coconut milk and all spices to a saucepan and allow them to simmer on medium heat for 10-30minutes the longer it simmers the stronger the flavours. I usually leave mine on for 20 minutes, but I enjoy the full flavour.

  2. Add fat of your choice (coconut oil or gee) optional.

  3. Turn off the stove and take off the heat, if adding honey add when the decoction has cooled slightly to reserve the honeys properties.

  4. Pour into your favourite cup, dust with cinnamon.

  5. Enjoy, this is my favourite ‘hug in a cup’

With love,
